great post! Tom Wolfe is a national treasure! As for your own observations, such straightforward pro-Americanism (pro-people and ideas, not pro-gov't) is rare in artists nowadays.
I do want to correct you on something you said at the end of your post. I believe that Congress' approval rating has been below 20% long before cap and trade or "stimulous" bills. (How the Democrats increased their 2006 majority in the 2008 election cycle is a great mystery to me, given their poll numbers during those years). I also want to quibble with your use of the word "suffer." Congress does not suffer low approval, they deserve low approval!

Yankee Doodle Dandy, that's a great example. I hadn't thought of that.

Zach, great post. The audience reaction speaks of making things not only work but also excel. It's the spirit of composing a theme song from an insult (as in "Yankee Doodle Dandy") that impresses me. Numbers of people have mentioned that they consider themselves fortunate to have been among the few to experience the lights-out performance: in their view they didn't just see a performance--they saw the best one.

A couple of things: I love the new blog. This Independence Day post was especially inspiring. Just started reading The Bonfire of the Vanities last week, and although it's the first Tom Wolfe I've ever read, I'm already pretty sure he's going to be one of my favorites.

I saw the play on Saturday night. Thought you were great!
